Destination guide

Bagamoyo & Pwani

An atmospheric Swahili port steeped in caravan-trade, slavery and German-colonial history, just north of Dar es Salaam.

Bagamoyo is one of the oldest and most historically resonant towns on the East African coast, lying about 75 km north of Dar es Salaam in the Pwani (Coast) region. Once the terminus of the great caravan routes from the interior, it was a major ivory and slave-trading port and later the first capital of German East Africa. Today its crumbling coral-stone buildings, old fort, mission and the nearby 13th-century Kaole ruins draw travellers interested in Swahili and colonial history, while its arts college and quiet beaches add a laid-back cultural charm. The town and its heritage sites are on Tanzania's UNESCO World Heritage tentative list.

Best time to visit

June to October offers dry, pleasant weather ideal for exploring the historic town, ruins and beaches. December to February is hot but good for the coast, while the long rains from March to May can make the unpaved lanes muddy and humid.

Common questions

It was a major 19th-century caravan terminus and ivory and slave-trading port, then the first capital of German East Africa, and it sits beside the much older Kaole ruins, making it one of the most historically layered towns on the coast.
It is popularly linked to the Swahili phrase 'bwaga moyo', meaning to lay down or unburden one's heart, reflecting its role as a resting point for caravans and, painfully, for enslaved people about to be shipped away.
It is about 75 km north of Dar, roughly a one-and-a-half to two-hour drive by taxi, private car or bus along the coastal road.
Yes. Saadani National Park lies a short drive north and is the only Tanzanian park on the ocean, making it easy to pair Bagamoyo's history with beach-and-bush wildlife.
