Coffee-farm gateway town at the foot of the Ngorongoro highlands

Karatu is the green highland town just below the Ngorongoro Crater, nicknamed Safari Junction for its position between Lake Manyara, the crater and the Serengeti road. Travellers use it as a comfortable, well-serviced overnight base before or after descending into the crater.

Best time to visit

Karatu is a pleasant, cool base year-round and works well alongside the dry-season safari months of June to October. The green season from November to May brings lush coffee farms, wildflowers and quieter lodges.
