North Zanzibar

Powder-white sand, swimmable tides and the last of the dhow-builders

How to get there

Getting to North Zanzibar

However you're arriving β€” from overseas, from another part of Tanzania, or just moving around once you're here.

Flying in from abroad

International visitors

Fly into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) near Stone Town, then transfer by road roughly 1.5 hours to Nungwi or Kendwa; some visitors arrive by Azam Marine ferry from Dar es Salaam and drive north.

From elsewhere in Tanzania

Upcountry & other cities

From Dar es Salaam take the Azam Marine fast ferry (about two hours) or a short flight on Coastal, Auric or ZanAir into Zanzibar, then continue by road to the north coast.

Getting around locally

Once you're in the region

Private transfers and taxis are the easiest way to reach and get around the north; shared daladalas run to Stone Town, and dhows handle short sea transfers and Mnemba diving trips.
