Stone Town
A UNESCO maze of coral-stone alleys where Africa, Arabia and India collide
How to get there
Getting to Stone Town
However you're arriving β from overseas, from another part of Tanzania, or just moving around once you're here.
Flying in from abroad
International visitors
Fly into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) just south of Stone Town; many long-haul visitors route via Dar es Salaam (DAR) or Kilimanjaro (JRO) and connect on a short hop, or arrive by Azam Marine fast ferry from Dar.
From elsewhere in Tanzania
Upcountry & other cities
From Dar es Salaam, Azam Marine fast ferries reach Zanzibar in about two hours, or 15-20 minute flights run on Coastal, Auric and ZanAir; domestic flights also link Arusha and the northern safari circuit.
Getting around locally
Once you're in the region
Stone Town's alleys are car-free and best explored on foot; beyond the old town, bajaji (tuk-tuks), taxis and Bolt cars operate, while shared daladalas run to the beaches and villages.
