Tanga
A laid-back colonial port with limestone caves, a historic harbour and the gateway to the misty Usambara Mountains.
Tanga is Tanzania's second-largest port and one of its most atmospheric, under-visited coastal cities, set on a sheltered bay in the far northeast near the Kenyan border. Once a thriving German and British colonial trading hub built on sisal, its historic centre is a treasure-trove of century-old administrative buildings, tree-lined avenues and faded grandeur. Beyond the town lie the eerie limestone Amboni Caves, the Galanos hot springs, coral reefs and the cool, forested Usambara Mountains, whose biodiverse Eastern Arc slopes rise inland. Relaxed and authentically Swahili, Tanga rewards travellers looking for history, nature and coast away from the crowds.

Best time to visit
The dry, cooler season from June to October is ideal for exploring the town, caves and Usambara Mountains. December to February is hot and sunny; the long rains of March to May bring humidity and can make mountain roads slippery.
