Destination guide

Tanga

A laid-back colonial port with limestone caves, a historic harbour and the gateway to the misty Usambara Mountains.

How to get there

Getting to Tanga

However you're arriving β€” from overseas, from another part of Tanzania, or just moving around once you're here.

Flying in from abroad

International visitors

Most visitors arrive via Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Moshi/Arusha, then continue overland to Tanga.

Upcountry & other cities

Tanga Airport (TGT) receives limited scheduled and charter flights; the city is also linked by good tarmac roads and regular buses from Dar es Salaam (about 5-6 hours) and from Moshi and Arusha via the Usambara route.

Getting around locally

Once you're in the region

Around town, use bajaji three-wheelers, boda-boda motorbikes, daladala minibuses and taxis; boats and dhows serve the bay, and shared vehicles run up to Lushoto in the Usambaras.
