Destination guide

Dar es Salaam

Tanzania's sun-soaked port city, where Swahili trade, Indian Ocean beaches and the gateway to Zanzibar meet.

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's largest city and its commercial and cultural heart, a humid, energetic metropolis strung along the Indian Ocean. Once a sleepy Swahili fishing village called Mzizima, it grew under the Sultan of Zanzibar and then German and British rule into the country's busiest port and de facto business capital. Today it blends bustling markets, Bongo Flava music, colonial-era landmarks and palm-lined beaches, and serves as the main jumping-off point for ferries to Zanzibar, flights to the safari parks and the northern terminus of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to the interior.

Best time to visit

The cooler, drier months from June to October are the most comfortable for exploring the city, with lower humidity and reliable ferry crossings. December to February is hot and sunny, good for beaches but sticky; avoid the long rains of March to May when downpours can disrupt travel.

Common questions

Fast catamaran ferries run several times daily from the Kivukoni ferry terminal to Stone Town, taking about two hours; buy tickets in advance from the official operators and keep your passport handy as it is treated as a domestic sea crossing.
Dar is generally welcoming, but as in any large city stay alert to petty theft, avoid displaying valuables, use reputable taxis or ride-hailing apps at night, and take extra care in crowded markets such as Kariakoo.
The modern Standard Gauge Railway departs from the dedicated Dar es Salaam SGR terminus (separate from the old central station), running inland toward Morogoro and Dodoma; check your ticket for the correct station.
The Msasani peninsula and Oyster Bay (Kinondoni) offer beaches, restaurants and boutique hotels, while the city centre near Kivukoni is handy for the ferry, business district and historic sights.
