Destination guide

Dar es Salaam

Tanzania's sun-soaked port city, where Swahili trade, Indian Ocean beaches and the gateway to Zanzibar meet.

How to get there

Getting to Dar es Salaam

However you're arriving β€” from overseas, from another part of Tanzania, or just moving around once you're here.

Flying in from abroad

International visitors

Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) is Tanzania's busiest airport, with direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and across Africa, located about 12 km southwest of the city centre.

From elsewhere in Tanzania

Upcountry & other cities

Domestic carriers such as Precision Air, Air Tanzania and Coastal Aviation link Dar to Zanzibar, Arusha, Mwanza and the southern parks, while the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) runs inland from the Dar terminus toward Morogoro and Dodoma.

Getting around locally

Once you're in the region

Get around by app-based taxis (Bolt, Uber), the Dar Rapid Transit (DART) bus network, three-wheeled bajaji and daladala minibuses; ferries to Zanzibar depart from the Kivukoni terminal.
